off the fiscal cliff. president is flying back to washington tonight unconcern what kind of deal making possibles he will find when we will come back. republican leaders made no decision about when to call their members back nor it is clear what kind of deal, if any, they will have to vote on. a lot of digging tonight for cnn's dana bash. i know we don't have any decisions out of the call but do question have a sense what republicans are telling speaker boehner? how likely are we to see a vote in time to avoid going of the cliff? >> it is in part the reason why house republicans didn't make a decision to bring the house back or when to do it. the ball is in the senate's courts especially with senate democrats. that has changed big time since a few weeks ago. at this point what they are trying to figure out is whether or not they can find enough republicans to cross party lines for what the president proposed right before he left for hawaii which is a scaled-back bill focusing on tax cuts and on what he campaigned on which is only keeping the cuts in place for those making over $2

or hope if you want to call it that a mini deal will be put into place to avert the fiscal cliff. you can see the nasdaq down about 9 points or so. to get stock specific, facebook in the news. it was the worst performing stock on the nasdaq 100 this morning but rebounding over the last hour. a facebook spokesperson speaking out in response to a report that said instagram was seeing a decline in users. facebook writing that this data is inaccurate. we continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of instagram. interestingly enough, if you take a look at some of the best performing stocks on the nasdaq 100, facebook made that list but still down from its ipo that it made back in may. that's putting it into perspective. stockstill down 30% from its ipo. >> pick it up from there. seema, thank you very much. >>> in the meantime, it is what everybody is talking about, the fiscal cliff deadline. in just one hour leaders from both sides of the aisle are scheduled for a sitdown and pow wow with president obama. our eamon javers is there. can we expect the best? >> ev

and when. the fiscal cliff could hurt a little or a lot. at least in the short run. that is up to the government and the choices the government makes for the first weeks or month or two at least. for instance, the irs, the internal revenue service can decide what to do about how they treat the tax increase. the agency could delay increasing the amount it withholds from your paycheck each week assuming congress would reach a deal. that way you wouldn't notice the tax increase before it turned around. if it didn't get reversed, you're going to get quite a bill from the taxman. also if we go over the cliff, and the spending cuts begin to take hold, the various agencies of the federal government can consider putting employees on furlough. meaning they take unpaid days off. that's considered a better alternative than layoffs, if we don't get a deal quickly, the furloughs will have to become layoffs, that will mean real pain. >>> the great question is how quickly that pain will begin. would it hurt the real economy before we get a deal? or would the prospect of pain create such press

ago with three days to go before we go over that proverbial fiscal cliff. they are meeting with the president and the treasury secretary timothy geithner, and they are trying to hash out a deal. but reports that the president has nothing new on the table has ended up spooking wall street in a big way just in the last hour, and as bill said we finished down near the lows of the day, down about 157 points for the dow. settling up right now. down what, about 165 at the very low, bill? >> i think so, yes. >> and the nasdaq finishing down 25 points and the s&p off by 15, a fifth straight day in the red. well, it is the last friday of 2012. it's in the books. check. still no deal in sight and no new offer either on the table from the president as eamon javers told us a little while ago. what now for the markets? we have our guests and our very own rick sell sebak with us. rick, let me get to you, first of all, because you're here on the set. what now for the markets? >> what now for the markets? it's going to be up or down dramatically which makes it challenging for all investors

soon. but six days before the fiscal cliff, president obama cutting short his christmas vacation on the off chance he and congress might be able to cut some kind of deal. he left. but brianna keilar is still there in honolulu. when's the president leaving and why does he really expect to avoid the cliff? >> reporter: i will be leaving as well when the president leaves, don. he is expected. he will be leaving tonight. that's local time. so he'll be traveling overnight and arriving back in the d.c. area late thursday morning. as you know, the senate reconvenes tomorrow. so he'll be going back as that is happening. we heard from him last week as he was heading out to hawaii. he said, see you next week. we had a thought that this was probably going to happen. he is officially now going back. he said last week, don, that he is still optimistic that something can get done. the other issue here, though, is you can imagine, how bad it would look if he go over the cliff and there's a lot of work to make sure that doesn't happen. he's here in hawaii on vacation. that would look terrible fo
